What do you eat before trick or treat?
Children in Halloween costumes

Dinner on Halloween can be tricky! The kids are too excited to eat, you’re probably too busy to cook, and no one – not even you, the mom! – really wants anything but candy.

Here at Lifetime Mothers we like to make our traditional Halloween stew, with chunks of beef, yams, carrots, zucchini, tomato and corn. We can make it the day before, or in the crockpot. Even the most impatient little kid can get down a few nutritious bites before heading out the door, and it’s easy for parents and teens to grab a ladlefull between groups of trick-or-treaters.

Do you have a Halloween food tradition? What do you do to get something filling into your kids before the candy rush?

girl with large pumpkin

Are your kids all excited about Halloween? Ours are! Even the teens can't wait to dress up and go to Halloween parties.

Yesterday we went to a local farm and got this great pumpkin. Is your family carving pumpkins this year?

Here are some Halloween ideas:

* If you're worried about combining jack-o-lantern candles and little ones, use the new battery-operated votive candles. They flicker like real candles.

* On Halloween night, replace your flood lights with orange, purple or green ones. You can find them at any home improvement store. It's a cheap and easy way to be Halloween-y!

* More e-z decor: Hide battery-operated revolving "disco lights" in your bushes or just inside your door.

* Kids costumes not reflective enough? Cut reflective tape in random small squares and triangles and scatter it over their costumes, especially on their arms and lower legs -- the parts that move the most and catch the light. The idea is to maximize the amount of area that can catch the eye of a driver.

* Get some glow necklaces at a party store or your local skating rink. Kids will happily wear these with any costume.

More about Halloween tomorrow!

Sunshine Time!

The AMA says our kids don't get enough vitamin D, and the best source is sunlight. This got us thinking about outdoor family activities.

What outdoor activities do you do with your kids?

Do you set aside special times to do things outdoors, especially when it's really cold or really hot?

Do your kids like to play outdoors? What do you do if your kids are getting plenty of exercise through indoor sports, but you want to get them out more in the fresh air?
